gavin menziesGavin Menzies wrote ‘1421: The Year China Discovered America’ in 2002, igniting a tremendous response.  The premise was simple: in 1421 the Chinese Treasure Fleet set sail with a mission “to proceed all the way to the end of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas.”  They returned two years later, having circumnavigated the globe and reaching every continent.

Critics claimed there was no chance of his being correct, but Menzies provides a lot of evidence and received lots of support from academics.  Among his key areas of evidence are maps showing the western hemisphere that were produced decades before Christopher Columbus sailed; genetic legacies and that by the time Europeans sailed into the western hemisphere, they found plants and animals from other continents.
