The remaining four members of The Grateful Dead recently performed their final five shows together, in acknowledgment of the band’s 50th anniversary. There are plenty of resources to explore the Dead’s origin story, early history, bios of the band, concert recordings, videos, more ephemera than one person could ever digest and lots, lots more (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10).
Adapting an old idea to this context, if you put five Grateful Dead fans, especially long-time ones, in a room to discuss concerts, you’re like to get 7 (or maybe 12) opinions. While the purpose of these shows was to celebrate the band’s legacy, critique of these last concerts abound and largely center on how they played, what they played (or didn’t) and who played them. I don’t address any of this.
Instead I thought it would be interesting to take all the Fare Thee Well sets as performed and make compilations using Grateful Dead shows so that those who wish Jerry was there to participate can have that experience, sort of.
I’ve listed the shows in chronological (but not play) order for each set and every song title links to the full concert I selected it from; most shows have multiple recordings so if you don’t like the one I linked to, explore the other options.
